Claims

Transportation while your car is being repaired

If your vehicle can’t be driven, is unsafe to drive, or is being repaired as a result of a claim, you may qualify for a rental vehicle or reimbursement of public transit, rideshare or taxi fares.

If you need a rental or replacement vehicle

When you report your claim, your claims representative will confirm your coverage and next steps, either on the phone or in writing (note that some claims may take longer for coverage to be confirmed, so keep your receipts. You will need them if you're eligible to be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket claim costs later).

When scheduling your vehicle for repairs, talk to the shop about arrangements for alternative transportation. Depending on your eligibility for loss of use coverage, you may be offered a replacement vehicle or another form of alternate transportation that meets your needs.

If your vehicle is not driveable and hasn't arrived at a repair shop yet, talk to your claims representative about whether you qualify for a rental vehicle.

Am I covered?

If you purchased Loss of Use coverage, whether on its own or as part of the RoadStar or RoadSide Plus package, you may be entitled to:

  • Renting a substitute vehicle, or

  • Taking taxis, rideshare or public transportation

If you have Loss of Use coverage and your vehicle can't be driven, is unsafe to drive or is being repaired, you can start using alternate transportation immediately after your claim is accepted.

Coverage limits

Purchased Loss of Use coverage has maximum total limits and may have maximum per-day limits. It is also limited to vehicles of a similar size to your own. Currently, ICBC doesn't authorize electric vehicle rentals.

Talk to your claims representative for more details.

If your repairs take longer than expected

If you need a replacement vehicle for longer than expected, either your repair shop or the rental company will handle any extensions needed. Keep in mind that any extensions are subject to maximum coverage limits.

If the other driver is at fault

If you don't have Loss of Use coverage, you would likely still be entitled to a substitute vehicle if the other driver is found to be at fault.
