You can renew an ICBC insurance policy as early as 44 days before it expires, whether over the phone, in person or online – we'll mail you a renewal reminder letting you know. Learn more about what you’ll need and find the renewal method that works for you.
Renewing online for the first time?
If you haven’t previously used the BC Services Card app or
Interac® verification service to log into another online service, we recommend setting up your preferred log-in option at least
a few days before
you start your renewal.

What you'll need to renew
We recommend gathering the following before starting your renewal:
-
Your renewal reminder and insurance documents
-
The
birth date and
B.C. driver’s licence number of any drivers you’d like to add to your policy during the renewal
-
Your vehicle’s
odometer reading if you want to be considered for a usage-based discount. Please note that discount eligibility requires two odometer readings.
-
Your
credit card (to pay in full) or
bank account information (to pay in installments)
How to renew your ICBC policy
We offer three methods for renewal. You can choose whichever one works best for you.
Understanding your renewal reminder
Your premium amount
Most insurance renewal reminders provide an estimate of the cost of your insurance for the same period as the previous policy term (typically, one year).
Your next insurance renewal reminder will include a premium amount based on your policy's previous coverage, listed drivers and eligible discounts. If you were in a crash and found responsible, it may also impact your premium.
If you're thinking about making changes to your policy before you renew, such as adding a driver or changing your coverage, you can
estimate your insurance costs using our online tool. You’ll need to log in with either your BC Services Card app or
Interac® verification service to prepare your estimate.
Here's a sample, similar to what you'll see in your next renewal reminder:
Your listed drivers
Your renewal reminder will include those drivers you’ve already added to your policy.
If you’d like to add any other drivers during your renewal, make sure you have their full name, birth date, and driver’s licence number.
To list
out-of-province drivers, you’ll also need to know the jurisdiction of their licence (for example, Alberta).
If you occasionally lend your car to drivers who
aren’t listed on your policy, you can add Unlisted Driver Protection to your policy.
It covers drivers who occasionally use your vehicle and can be added to your policy with no additional cost (as long as an unlisted driver hasn’t caused a crash using any of your vehicles).
Your vehicle use
Your renewal reminder also includes a brief description of your
rate class and territory. Your rate class reflects how your vehicle is used, whether for commuting, business or pleasure. Your territory refers to where you live.
ICBC offers two
usage-based insurance discounts based on distance travelled. The low-kilometre discount is available on Basic coverage for vehicles driven less than 5,000 kilometres per year, and the distance-based discount is available on select optional coverages for vehicles driven less than 10,000 kilometres per year. When you renew your annual policy at an Autoplan broker, make sure to bring a current odometer reading (no more than a week old) if you think you may qualify.
Your coverage
If your circumstances have changed or you'd like to update your existing coverage, talk to your Autoplan broker. They'll help you make any adjustments to ensure that your insurance meets your needs.
Tickets, fines and penalties
Please note that before you renew, you'll need to pay any outstanding amount that you owe to ICBC or the provincial government, including traffic tickets, penalty point premiums and any Autoplan debt.
If you have frequent or serious driving convictions resulting from violations, your premium costs for Collision and Third Party Liability coverages will be impacted.
