Financial benefits to support your recovery
A crash can affect your financial wellbeing as much as your physical wellbeing. That’s why ICBC has financial benefits to support your recovery.
Income replacement benefits
If your injuries have prevented you from working after the first seven days, you may be eligible for the income replacement benefit. Learn more about this benefit.
Travel reimbursement
If travelling to your treatments requires you to pay any costs (like mileage, transit or parking) you may be eligible for reimbursement. Eligible expenses can be submitted by signing into our online claims service and going to the "submit expenses" tab. After submitting an expense, you can track its status in the same tab.
If you have difficulty signing into or using our online claims service, you can also submit eligible expenses by sending us a completed Treatment Travel Expense form .
Personal care assistance
If you need help performing daily tasks during your recovery, you may also be eligible for the personal care assistance benefit. To see if you qualify, discuss completing a Personal Care Assessment with your ICBC recovery specialist to determine your needs.
If the Personal Care Assistance Report identifies the need for further support, you may hire a personal care assistant to help you with daily activities as you recover. You may choose to hire a professional assistant, or someone close to you, like a family member. If you qualify, ICBC will reimburse you for the cost of their assistance.
To be reimbursed, you'll need to maintain records of all costs of your personal care, which includes tracking and documenting the hours that your personal care assistant works. Submit them regularly through our online claims service for reimbursement.
Based on your Personal Care Assessment, the benefit amount will depend on the nature of your injuries and assistance required.
Most injuries: up to a maximum of $5,703 per month
Catastrophic injuries that don’t require 24-hour care: up to a maximum of $6,820 per month
Catastrophic injuries that do require 24-hour care: up to a maximum of $11,333 per month
Caregiver benefit
If you were the primary caregiver of another person before the crash and are no longer able to provide that care due to your injuries, you may be eligible for a weekly payment to cover new caregiving expenses. Your ICBC recovery specialist can let you know if you are eligible and help you apply for this benefit.
Financial benefits for severe, permanent and catastrophic injuries
Collisions can result in devastating, life-altering and permanent injuries. Anyone facing these severe injuries may need ongoing medical and rehabilitation support. We have a dedicated team of advanced recovery specialists available to help our most seriously injured customers get the care and support they need for as long as they need it, even over a lifetime.
If your injury is severe, permanent, or catastrophic, you may be eligible for:
Benefits covering extraordinary expenses for travel, accommodation, and home and vehicle modifications where needed.
Higher coverage for personal care assistance of up to $11,333 per month if you require 24/7 supervision.
A lump sum permanent impairment benefit of $299,670 if you are catastrophically injured.
Customers receiving the maximum permanent impairment and activity of daily living benefits are typically those whose injuries may include quadriplegia (tetraplegia), paraplegia, or severe brain injury. If you suffer a catastrophic injury, one of ICBC’s Advanced Support and Recovery Specialists will work with you and your medical team to help you access all the treatment, care and support available to you.
Recreational benefit
If you have permanent injuries that prevent you from participating in your previous recreational and leisure activities, like sports and exercise, you may be eligible for additional support benefits or expense reimbursement. Talk to your ICBC recovery specialist to see if you qualify.
