About ICBC

Road safety improvement program

Making your community safer

Safer roads mean fewer crashes, injuries and fatalities. Since 1990, ICBC has invested more than $240 million in over 9,000 projects across the lands now known as British Columbia.

As part of our commitment to Reconciliation, we’re expanding this program to work with more Indigenous communities. We recognize that Indigenous communities know their own needs best, and we want to support your ideas to make roads safer for everyone.

How we can support your community

If there’s a road, crossing or intersection in your community that feels unsafe, our road safety team can:

  • work with staff and leaders to identify risks and recommend updates

  • engage with your community and local road authorities to explore solutions

  • connect your community to resources and funding

Projects we can support

We can support you with building, installing and accessing funding for projects that reduce crash risk and improve safety.

A new crosswalk with signage, installed on Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc Nations territory near the town of Ashcroft, British Columbia.

Pedestrian safety improvements

We supported the installation of a new crosswalk and associated signage for the Ashcroft First Nation to improve the safety of pedestrians who want to cross over the roadway to access the Ashcroft Indian Band office, sports fields and campground.

A newly installed speed reader board along Highway 16, near the Gitsegukla community at the confluence of the Kitseguecla and Skeena Rivers.

Speed reduction improvements

Our team can work with your community to determine the best location for speed reader boards to prevent serious injuries. Our team supported the design and installation of two speed readers boards on Highway 16, near the community of Gitsegukla.
