From couch to car: ICBC rolls out at-home online knowledge tests for new drivers

June 09, 2026

Getting on the road just got easier. Aspiring drivers can now take their knowledge test from home, as ICBC introduces a new online option that lets customers complete this important step on their own schedule.

The online knowledge test can be accessed at any time of day by simply using a laptop or computer equipped with a camera, through a stable internet connection. It’s available for ICBC customers seeking to obtain their passenger vehicle or motorcycle learner’s licence (Class 5, 6, 7 and 8).

Each year, ICBC conducts more than 337,000 knowledge tests across the province. Adding the online options for this service is a significant step forward in modernizing driver licensing, making the process more accessible, convenient and responsive to the needs of our customers today.

For people living in rural or remote communities, the new option reduces the need to travel long distances to an office to take their knowledge test. It also supports those who may feel anxious or intimidated by taking a test in person, allowing them to complete it in a familiar and comfortable environment.

“By offering this test online, we’re giving new drivers more choice and convenience, especially people in rural and remote communities who used to have to commute far distances to take the test,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “This is part of our work to modernize ICBC services so they’re more convenient, accessible and work better for everyone in British Columbia.”

The online knowledge test uses sophisticated technology, including image verification, continuous webcam monitoring, plus real‑time behaviour tracking to protect safety, uphold test integrity, and detect and deter cheating during the online knowledge test.

“At ICBC, we’re focused on modernizing and enhancing our digital services to better serve our customers and this is just the beginning,” said Jason McDaniel, ICBC’s president and CEO. “Bringing the knowledge test online is the first step in transforming driver licensing in B.C. We’re also looking ahead to offering online renewals and replacements for B.C. driver’s licences and BCIDs starting in 2027, as we continue to put our customers at the centre of everything we do.”

Just like the in-office test, the online knowledge test is available in 12 languages to meet the diverse needs of our customers.

In-office knowledge testing will remain an option for our customers at 114 office locations that offer ICBC driver licensing services throughout B.C. Customers who successfully complete their online knowledge test will need to attend a driver licensing office, pay the standard licence fee, and bring two pieces of ID to have their photo taken, vision test and licence issued. Applicants under 19 need to bring parental consent or have a parent with them.

More information on the online knowledge test is available on icbc.com.
