ICBC services during Canada Post disruption

November 14, 2024

With the disruption to Canada Post mail services, we are encouraging customers to consider the options available to communicate with us and access ICBC services.

Driver licensing

We will not be able to mail B.C. driver’s licences during the postal disruption. However, when you obtain or renew your B.C. driver’s licence, you will be issued an interim driver’s licence (paper licence) that will be valid for 90 days. If a postal disruption continues beyond that period, we can issue another interim driver’s licence that would be valid for an additional 90 days.

This is an example of an interim driver licence that is a valid driving licence.

If you require your drivers abstract while you have your interim licence or have any other inquiries related to Driver Licensing Services that could be affected by the postal strike, please call Driver Licensing Contact Centre at 1-800-950-1498.

Claims payments

We are encouraging all customers to sign up for electronic funds transfers (EFTs) to ensure you receive all the payments you're entitled to. This will be the fastest way to obtain your payments while the postal disruption continues. In very specific circumstances, arrangements can be made to have cheques printed and picked up in person at your local ICBC Claim Centre, however this process would likely take longer than EFT.

Policy renewals

We urge you to check your insurance policy to make sure you visit your broker before the policy’s expiry date. Renewal reminders will not be sent to customers by mail during any postal service disruption.

You can renew an ICBC insurance policy as early as 44 days before it expires, whether over the phone, in person or online.

If you haven’t renewed online before, and you haven’t previously used the BC Services Card app or Interac verification service to sign into another online service, we recommend setting up your preferred sign-in option at least a few days before you start your renewal. Watch this video for more information.

During the postal disruption, customers renewing online will need to either print their insurance documents themselves or visit any Autoplan insurance broker to get their policy printed; the option to have the policy sent by mail is not available at this time.
