William (Bill) Sundhu
Bill Sundhu is a Kamloops-based lawyer and former provincial judge with 40 years, experience working in the courts. He was born in New Westminster and raised in Williams Lake in a pioneering immigrant family where his father was the first person from India to permanently settle in the Central Cariboo region in the 1950s.
Bill has a Master’s Degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford. He practices domestic and international human right law and criminal justice. He has appointment to the List of Counsel of the International Criminal Court in the Hague and selected on a panel of International Experts to train members of the Tunisian judiciary, in the aftermath of the “Arab Spring” in Human Rights in the Administration of Justice.
Bill works with minority and Indigenous human rights, civil society and legal organizations. He has served as the criminal law duty counsel for the Haida Gwaii Court circuit since 2011 and was a founding member of the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies of B.C. He has served as an Executive-Member of the Canadian Bar Association National Criminal Justice Section and as a Tribunal Member of the Law Society of B.C. each for seven years.
Bill has served on the Board of Governors of the University of British Columbia 2018-2024, including as Vice-Chair, the Interim Board Chair, and on several committees. He is a frequent guest lecturer/speaker and sought out by media for commentary on human rights and justice issues.
Bill also holds a Bachelor of Arts (UBC 1980) and Bachelor of Laws (1983) from the University of Windsor.
