Road safety

Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters

Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters are designed for people with limited mobility because of a permanent or temporary disability that makes it difficult to walk.

Safety requirements

  • You must not exceed 25 km/h on a clean, paved and level surface

  • You can operate a personal mobility vehicle without a driver's licence or insurance

Where can I ride?

  • Anywhere pedestrians can go - on sidewalks, and multi‑use paths

  • Keep in mind that you will be riding in shared spaces - predictable, respectful behaviour helps keep everyone safe

How to ride

  • Ride alone - no passengers or towing

  • Ride single file, as far right as practicable

  • Use hand signals or turn signals when turning

Stay alert

  • Watch for motor vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, other micromobility and opening car doors

  • Watch for posted speed limit at all times. Do not exceed this speed while traveling through bike lanes.

  • Slow down in busy areas

  • Use your bell or horn when passing

Never ride distracted or impaired

  • No alcohol or drugs

  • No cellphone or mobile-device use

Pre-ride checklist

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (can attach reflectors for better visibility)

  • Front and rear lights

  • A bell or horn (for alerting others)

  • Battery is charged and securely attached

  • Brakes are working properly

  • Tires inflated and free of damage

Rules of the road

As of June 2024, electric wheelchair and mobility scooter riders have protection under B.C.'s new vulnerable road user law, which introduces new regulations to help drivers share the road safely with everyone, including minimum safe passing distances around cyclists, pedestrians and other non-motorists.
