Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters
Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters are designed for people with limited mobility because of a permanent or temporary disability that makes it difficult to walk.
Safety requirements
You must not exceed 25 km/h on a clean, paved and level surface
You can operate a personal mobility vehicle without a driver's licence or insurance
Where can I ride?
Anywhere pedestrians can go - on sidewalks, and multi‑use paths
Keep in mind that you will be riding in shared spaces - predictable, respectful behaviour helps keep everyone safe
How to ride
Ride alone - no passengers or towing
Ride single file, as far right as practicable
Use hand signals or turn signals when turning
Stay alert
Watch for motor vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, other micromobility and opening car doors
Watch for posted speed limit at all times. Do not exceed this speed while traveling through bike lanes.
Slow down in busy areas
Use your bell or horn when passing
Never ride distracted or impaired
No alcohol or drugs
No cellphone or mobile-device use
Pre-ride checklist
Weather-appropriate clothing (can attach reflectors for better visibility)
Front and rear lights
A bell or horn (for alerting others)
Battery is charged and securely attached
Brakes are working properly
Tires inflated and free of damage
Rules of the road
As of June 2024, electric wheelchair and mobility scooter riders have protection under B.C.'s new vulnerable road user law, which introduces new regulations to help drivers share the road safely with everyone, including minimum safe passing distances around cyclists, pedestrians and other non-motorists.
