Other micromobility

Electric skateboards, hoverboards and other self-balancing micromobility cannot be operated on public roads, sidewalks, or bike lanes in B.C.

B.C.'s Motor Vehicle Act defines these vehicle types as motor vehicles, but they do not meet provincial equipment safety standards for on-road use.

Electric skateboards, electric unicycles, onewheels, hoverboards, and other self-balancing micromobility are not legal on B.C. public roads because they do not meet provincial safety standards (no turn signals, no head lamps, low visibility, etc.)
Motorized skateboards and other micromobility may only be operated where the Motor Vehicle Act does not apply, such as on
- Private property that does not have public vehicle access
- Trails or pathways if permitted by municipal bylaws
As an exception, these vehicles are allowed to be operated on designated parade routes. If using the vehicle for a parade, it must be insured with a minimum of $200,000 third party liability policy. This coverage is not provided by ICBC.

When operating in designated areas, wear safety gear: helmet, gloves, body protection, appropriate clothing
Carry out a pre-ride check (brakes, hardware, tires)
