Getting through intersections
Intersections are dangerous. Police estimate that
among the crashes they attend, one in five happen at signalised
intersections. Always be extra cautious.
Intersection safety tips
As you approach
- Check the traffic light ahead. Unless
it has just turned green, be prepared to stop. Slow down well
in advance of a red or yellow light.
- If the Don't Walk signal is lit or flashing,
the traffic light might be about to change. Be prepared.
- Go through a yellow light only if it's
unsafe to stop.
- Always check your mirrors and look around.
- Don't make any sudden moves. You'll risk
confusing other drivers. Use your turn signals well in advance.
- Don't change lanes in an intersection;
be in the correct lane well before a turn.
When you stop
- Stop behind the line or crosswalk.
- If you stop behind another vehicle, leave
enough space so you can see its wheels -
about a car length.
- Keep your wheels straight.
After the light turns green
- Check the intersection before you move
forward. Someone might be running a red light or jumping a green.
Counting to three works well.
- Don't enter the intersection if traffic
is backed up on the other side. You might get stuck in the middle.
- Accelerate moderately to flow with traffic.
- Ignore aggressive, honking drivers.
- Always watch for cyclists and pedestrians,
especially when visibility is poor. Yield to them when making
a turn.
- Assume nothing.
