Child Restraint Laws - Examples
Never hold your baby in your arms or on your lap while riding in the car. Even in a minor crash the baby can be killed.
Consider what could happen in a frontal crash at 50 km/h to:
a) an adult who is not wearing a seatbelt and is holding a child.
- A 150-pound adult will crush the infant against the dash with the equivalent weight of a 3½-ton truck.
b) an adult who is wearing a seatbelt and holding a 10-pound child.
- The adult will be unable to hold onto the infant because of the forces generated by the crash. The infant will collide with the interior of the vehicle or other occupants, or be ejected from the vehicle.
Remember, it's the law in B.C. that infants, children and adults ride restrained (in restraint systems - car seats - certified to CMVSS) in motor vehicles.
