Intersection Safety

Every day, approximately 250 crashes occur at intersections (for those doing the math, that's over 90,000 every year). Running lights, tailgating and not yielding to others' right of way are among the leading causes. Most of these crashes are preventable because they're caused by decisions we make as drivers. In a lot of cases, we make these decisions because we're in too much of a hurry to get where we're going.

In a new ad campaign that begins airing on TV and radio stations across B.C. in November, drivers are reminded that, "When you slow down, you see more of the road."

Also at this time of year, bad weather causes a dramatic spike in crashes in northern and southern interior areas of our province. Casualty crash rates double in the north and triple in the southern interior regions in December, compared to October.

To address that risk, we're working with the police to remind drivers to adjust their speeds relative to weather conditions and not just the posted speed limit.
