About vehicle registration
What is vehicle registration?
Before you can get licence plates or insurance for a vehicle in British Columbia, the vehicle [definition] must be registered in B.C. Trailers must be registered, too.
The vehicle registration serves as an official record of your vehicle’s specifications and design. It also records any transactions related to the vehicle.
The registration remains on permanent record in the ICBC database.
In B.C., you can register a vehicle — as well as license and insure it — at any Autoplan broker in the province.
Insuring your vehicle
All motorists in B.C. must carry basic automobile insurance. For vehicles registered in B.C., ICBC's Basic Autoplan provides this coverage.

When vehicle registration isn’t needed
The B.C. Motor Vehicle Act allows for exemption periods of:
- up to six months for motor vehicles and utility trailers used for touring purposes
- thirty days for motor vehicles and utility trailers (except for commercial vehicles) used for non-touring purposes
Note: If you are bringing your vehicle to B.C. from another jurisdiction, the vehicle must be properly licensed and insured.
