Preparing for a re-exam
If you are required to take a driver's re-examination,
you will receive a notice in the mail.
Booking an appointment
Call or visit your nearest driver licensing office to book your appointment for a road test. You must do this within 30 days of receiving the notice.
Your appointment could take up to 1-1/2 hours.
If you fail to attend your road test appointment without providing at least 48 hours cancellation notice or a valid reason acceptable to ICBC, you will be charged $25.00 at your next road test appointment.
What tests will I have to take?
When you come for your road test you will
be given a vision screening and a traffic signs
and signals test. You will also be asked
a few questions about traffic safety. You will then take a
road test.
What to bring
- Be sure to bring primary and secondary
identification
when you come for your road test.
- If you need eyeglasses for driving or
reading, remember to bring them to your re-exam.
- Ensure that your vehicle insurance
is valid and that you have your registration documents. Your driver
examiner may ask to see them.
- If you ordinarily drive a special-needs
vehicle (e.g., with hand controls), be sure to bring it, or a
similarly equipped vehicle, to your re-exam.
Preparing for your re-exam
There are several things you can do to help yourself
prepare for a road test re-exam.
These include:
- Read RoadSense
for Drivers. This guide explains the
licensing tests and gives information you will need. As you read
the guide, pay particular attention to the sections on driving
rules and traffic signs.
- Use Tuning
Up for New Drivers.
This manual gives you step-by-step instructions for driving practices,
such as shoulder checks and stopping. It's a good idea to have
a friend or family member help you practise.
- Review the brochure How
to Prepare for Driver Licensing Tests (available
from ICBC driver licensing offices).
- Watch the ICBC video BC
Safe Drivers Wanted (available at your
library).
- Practise hazard perception by naming
hazards out loud as you drive. Ask someone to come with you while
you practise to identify any hazards you may miss.
- Consider taking a few driving lessons
to strengthen your driving skills.
