The novice stage
After you pass your Class 8 road test, we
will take your photo and issue you a Class 8 licence. Now you enter
the novice stage of graduated licensing.
Note: The Class 8 licence is valid for 5
years.
Novice stage restrictions
During the novice stage, you must:
- display an N sign
We will issue you a green N (Novice) sign
[click
for definition].
This replaces the L sign. When riding, you must display the N sign
on the back of your motorbike or clothing so that drivers behind
can see it.
- not drink and drive
You must not drive with any alcohol
in the body.
If you violate these restrictions, you are
subject to graduated licensing penalties.
All other licence restrictions of the learner
stage no longer apply.
How long is the novice stage?
The novice stage lasts a minimum of 24months.
After this time, most novice riders qualify to take the Class 6
road test. If you pass the Class
6 test, you get your full-privilege Class 6 motorcycle driver's
licence.
