How to get your motorcycle driver's licence (when you don't already have a B.C. driver's licence)

Apply | Learner stage | Skills test | Class 8 road test | Novice stage | Class 6 road test | Preparing for the skills test and road tests

The learner stage

Your application was accepted. You passed your knowledge and vision tests. You've been issued a motorcycle learner's (Class 8) licence. The Class 8 learner's licence is valid for two years.

Now you can start practising on your motorbike. Great!

Remember though: during the learner stage of graduated licensing, there are several restrictions:

Learner stage restrictions

Qualified supervisor

Until you pass the motorcycle skills test, you must always ride within sight of a qualified supervisor - someone 25 or older who holds a valid Class 6 licence.

Restricted speed

You must not exceed 60 km/h until you pass the motorcycle skills test.

No passengers

You must not carry any passengers.

Restricted riding hours

You are permitted to ride only during daylight hours, that is, between sunrise and sunset.

L sign

You must display a red L (Learner) sign [click for definition] on the rear of your motorcycle. You can also display it on your clothing as long as it is clearly visible from behind your motorcycle.

Zero blood-alcohol content

You must not drive a motorcycle with any alcohol in your body.

These restrictions may help reduce your chances of crashing while you're gaining skills and experience.

How long is the learner stage?

The learner stage lasts a minimum of 12 months.

After you have held your motorcycle (Class 8) learner's licence for a minimum of 30 days, you can take a motorcycle skills test. When you pass this test, the supervisor and speed restrictions are removed.

After 12 months, you qualify to take your first road test: the Class 8 road test.

Your Class 8 learner's licence is valid for two years.

NOTE: You can stay in the Class 8 learner stage as long as you want. However, after two years, your motorcycle learner's licence will expire. To renew it, you would have to take the vision, knowledge and motorcycle skills tests again.
