Applying for a motorcycle learner's licence
If you want to get your motorcycle driver's licence and you've never
had a B.C. driver's licence (Classes 1 - 5), you must go through
a program of training and testing called graduated licensing.
See the first page of this section for a quick
summary of graduated licensing.
You begin graduated licensing at the learner stage.
To enter this stage - and start riding - you will need a
learner's (Class 7L and 8L) licence.
Here's how you apply for one:
Step 1
Study two ICBC
guides: RoadSense
for Drivers and RoadSense
for Riders.
- One of the next things you will do is take
two knowledge tests. The knowledge tests are based on the material
in these guides, so it's important that you take the time to study
them.
- You can pick up free copies from your
nearest driver
licensing office, or download
RoadSense for Drivers
or RoadSense for Riders now.
Step 2
When you feel
ready to take the knowledge tests, go to your driver licensing office
and apply for a learner's (Class 7L and 8L) licence. You'll
have to answer some questions and provide any information requested.
Be sure to bring proper
identification documents with you. This is important. Sorry,
but without the right ID we can't process your application.
Note: Outstanding court fines or debts owed to
the province or to ICBC must be settled before you can obtain a
licence. See Tickets
and other penalties for details.
Also, if you are under 19, you'll need to bring
your custodial parent or legal guardian with you, as they need to
sign a consent for your application. (If you are not living with
a parent or guardian, ask for more information.)
Take two knowledge
tests:
- a passenger vehicle
knowledge test, and
- a motorcycle knowledge test
We will also make sure you are fit
to ride. We will ask you about your medical condition and conduct
a vision test.
Step 3
If you
pass the knowledge tests and your application is accepted, you will
get your motorcycle learner's (Class 7L and 8L) licence. The fee
for this licence is $10. Then, you can go
on to the learner
stage.
