Testing for a commercial full-privilege licence
To qualify for a full-privilege [click
for definition] Class 1, 2, 3 or
4 (commercial) licence, you must pass:
- a pre-trip
inspection test (including an air
brake pre-inspection if applicable), and
- a road
test
These two tests together are often referred to
as "the road test."
You may take both tests on the same day.
Retaking tests
If you fail the pre-trip inspection test, you
may retake it without having to retake the road test. You will need
to pay the test fee again whenever you retake a test. Contact
licensing staff for more information about retaking tests.
The pre-trip inspection test
The pre-trip inspection part of the road test
lets you demonstrate that you know how, when and why you must complete
a pre-trip inspection.
If you are applying for a commercial licence,
you must conduct a pre-trip inspection on and take the road test with
an appropriate
vehicle.
If you are applying for a Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 unrestricted
commercial licence, you must also complete and submit a written
trip inspection report.
The road test
During the on-road part of the road test you must
demonstrate your ability in several basic skill areas, including,
but not limited to:
- starting and stopping
- shifting gears
- turning, steering, backing up and parking
- merging with highway traffic and exiting from
highways
- driving in traffic
- coupling and uncoupling a tractor unit from
a trailer (for a Class 1 road test)
