Appealing an impoundment | Getting
your vehicle released early
Getting your vehicle released early for compassionate
reasons or on the grounds of economic hardship
A person who lives with the owner and holds a
legally valid driver's licence may apply to have the vehicle released
early on compassionate grounds. The applicant must show that:
- the vehicle is needed for work, education or
medical treatment, and
- no other suitable transportation is available
A business may also apply for early release on the grounds of
economic hardship.
Here's the process:
- The applicant and the vehicle owner both come
to an ICBC driver
licensing office. Both must bring identification. Bring the
Notice of Impoundment as
well.
- Complete an application form and pay the $100
application fee. If your application is successful, you must
also
pay a $100 release fee if the vehicle is released on compassionate
grounds. A $450 early release fee is payable if the vehicle is
released early on the grounds of economic hardship.
The driver now has a valid licence
The vehicle may also be released early when:
- it was impounded because the driver did not
hold a valid licence, and
- after the impoundment the driver obtains a
valid licence
Here's the process:
- The driver and the vehicle owner both come
to an ICBC driver
licensing office. Both must bring identification. Bring the
Notice of Impoundment as
well.
- Complete the Request
for Vehicle Release form.
- Licensing staff will check the driver's licence
and, if valid, will release the vehicle.
