Loss of Use
A Loss of Use policy will cover the cost
of other transportation while your car is being repaired.
If you meet the conditions explained below,
Loss of Use will pay for:
- renting a vehicle
(subject to daily and total limits that you choose when you purchase
your coverage)
- hiring a taxi,
or
- using public transportation
Note: Before arranging
other transportation, you must contact your ICBC
adjuster to confirm your entitlement to Loss of Use coverage.
The adjuster will advise you about the type of vehicle or transportation
costs you may claim while your vehicle is being repaired.
If your car is a write-off ("total loss")
Loss of Use will cover your transportation: from
the time of the crash until ICBC presents you with a settlement offer for your vehicle, or until you reach the limit of your coverage - whichever happens first.
Conditions and limitations
- To qualify for Loss of Use coverage, you must
have the applicable Collision,
Comprehensive
or Specified
Perils insurance.
Example: If you buy Loss of Use and only have Collision
coverage, your Loss of Use only covers you if your car is damaged
from a collision. It won't cover you for a Comprehensive claim,
such as if your car is vandalized (unless you also have Comprehensive
coverage).
- Payments for substitute rental
vehicles are limited to vehicle makes
and models specified by ICBC that are similar in size to your
own vehicle.
- Loss of Use Coverage doesn't apply
when:
- the amount claimed in damages is less
than the deductible
- you choose not to make the claim
- Limousines used for hire, taxis and u-drives
are not eligible for this coverage.
