When does UMP apply?
Underinsured Motorist Protection covers the following
people:
- The person named in an Autoplan policy as the owner
of a vehicle licensed and insured in B.C.
- Individuals named as lessees on the Autoplan policies
of leased vehicles
- Members of the households of vehicle owners or lessees
- Persons who hold a valid B.C. driver's licence and
their household members (but only if the driver's licence is valid at the
time of the crash, is not under suspension, and does not have any money owing
against it for Driver Point Premiums or Multiple
Crash Premium)
UMP also covers any of the persons mentioned above when
they are:
- injured or killed while driving or riding in any
vehicle
- injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash as pedestrians
or cyclists
In addition, UMP covers any person who is injured or
killed while driving or riding in most B.C. licensed and insured vehicles. Taxis,
buses and limousines do not have UMP insurance of their own, but if you have
UMP coverage through your own vehicle, driver's licence or Excess
UMP, you will be covered while riding in a taxi, bus or limousine.
