What Basic Autoplan doesn't cover
Basic Autoplan coverage applies in Canada
and all of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. It does
not apply in Mexico or any other country. If you are taking your
vehicle to another country, you must buy insurance that applies
there. Sometimes you can buy this at the border before you go into
the country.
If you and your vehicle are outside of Canada
and the U.S. for more than 30 days, keep proof of the dates you
crossed the border(s) and a photocopy of the policy from the other
country. You may be eligible for a refund for your Autoplan premium
for the time you were away.
Other restrictions
There are circumstances when your Autoplan
insurance may not cover you. They include:
- Your vehicle is insured in the wrong
rate class [click
for definition] (that is,
for the wrong use).
- Driving / riding without holding a valid
motorcycle or driver's licence, or without a valid learners
licence, or driving / riding contrary to licensing restrictions
or conditions, may breach your insurance coverage with ICBC.
This means that ICBC is not liable to pay your claim, including
claims for your own injuries, or damage that you might cause
to your motorcycle, or to other people or property.
- You crash while avoiding the police
or using a vehicle for any illicit or illegal purpose.
- You are driving without a valid driver's
licence or when your licence is suspended.
- Your vehicle is driven by someone not
authorized or qualified to drive.
- You are impaired by alcohol, drugs
or any other intoxicating substance at the time of the crash.
- You present a fraudulent or exaggerated
claim.
- Your vehicle was deliberately used
to cause loss or damage.
- Your claim results from acts of war,
rebellion, insurrection or a nuclear energy hazard.
Some other restrictions are noted in the
specific sections that describe the 5 types of coverage in Basic
Autoplan:
