Appealing vehicle impoundment

You can apply to have your impounded car released early by requesting a review of the impoundment. You have 30 days to complete your application.

How to apply:

  1. Visit an ICBC driver licensing office with your Notice of Impoundment and required ID.
  2. You will be given an application form at the driver licensing office; complete and return it.
  3. Choose whether to apply for your review in writing or in person. Pay $50 for a written review or $100 for a review in person.
  4. If you decide to review in person by phone, you will present your case to an adjudicator. Wait to receive a letter in the mail that will tell you the location and date of this review.

If you are successful, your vehicle will be released. Here are the steps to getting your vehicle back.

If the vehicle is registered by a company?

The owner of the company or another designated person must apply to appeal a vehicle impoundment.

If another person is designated, the steps outlined above still apply, but that person will be asked to provide an authorization letter on company letterhead signed by the company owner. Have this ready before visiting the driver licensing office.
