Moving to B.C. from another province

How to get your B.C. driver's licence
Note: These steps also apply if you're moving from the U.S., Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Japan or South Korea.
If you have held a licence for two or more years from another Canadian province or the countries above, you may transfer to a B.C. driver’s licence immediately:
- Canadian driver’s licence for a passenger car, motorcycle or commercial vehicle (equivalent to B.C. Class 1, 2, 3 or 4)
- U.S. driver’s licence for a passenger car or motorcycle
- Austrian or Swiss driver’s licence for Category 3
- German driver’s licence for Category 3 or Class 3 for passenger cars
- Ordinary Japanese driver’s licence
- South Korean licence for Class 1 or 2 for passenger cars
Steps to get your B.C. licence
Visit a driver licensing office and bring the following items with you:
- Required ID
- If your licence is not in English, please bring a translation of the document. You may be required to have the translation done by an ICBC-approved translator. Please visit your local driver licensing office for more information.
- $31 to pay for your new licence.
Note: If your licence is less than two years old or you are unable to prove that you have been driving for more than two years, you must be placed in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP).
