Proving your driving experience

Moving to B.C.?

To be eligible for a full-privilege B.C. driver’s licence, you must have held a driver’s licence (not a learner’s) for at least two years.

Accepted documents

We accept any one of the following documents as proof of your driving experience:

How to get your driving record or a letter of experience

To get a copy of your driving record or a letter of your driving experience, contact the driver licensing authority in your area.

These documents must meet the following requirements:

  • be an original, issued by the licensing authority—a fax or letter from an agent or a printout from the internet is not acceptable

  • include
    • the name, address and phone number of the driver’s licensing authority in your province or territory
    • your name and birth date
    • your driver’s licence number (or other unique identifier)
    • class of licence(s) held, and
    • either the date(s) your licence(s) were originally issued, or the amount of time you have held a licence

Driving fewer than two years?

If you’ve been driving fewer than two years (or cannot prove your driving experience), you can still get a B.C. licence. However, you will have to go through our graduated licensing program.
