There are three tests to pass for your full-privilege commercial driver’s licence: a pre-trip inspection test, a road test, and a medical exam.

These 2 tests together are often referred to as "the road test." You must take both tests on the same day if it is a road test. However, if it just a pre-trip, it can be done as a standalone test.
As of June 1, 2009 there are new rules when approaching stopped emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights as you are required to slow down and leave plenty of room. These include police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and vehicles used by vehicle inspectors, conservation officers, park rangers and special constables employed by the Ministry of Forests and Range. Be aware of these rules on your road test!
The pre-trip inspection part of the road test lets you demonstrate that you know how, when and why you should complete a pre-trip inspection.
If you are applying for a commercial licence, you will conduct a pre-trip inspection and take the road test.
If you are applying for a Class 1/2/3 or 4 unrestricted commercial licence, you will also complete and submit a written trip inspection report.
If you fail the pre-trip inspection test, you may retake it without having to retake the road test. You will need to pay the test fee again whenever you retake a test. Contact licensing staff for more information about retaking tests.
