Fraud investigators: the ICBC crime-busters

In your region

At every claim centre, there are Claims Investigation Teams trained to probe suspicious claims.

Suspect bodily injury claims are investigated by an Investigation Team comprising an ICBC injury adjuster and an experienced investigator. Material Damage Claims Investigation Teams are similar, but handle suspicious vehicle damage claims.

Across the province

When it appears an organized group is trying to defraud ICBC, the Provincial Investigative Team conducts the investigation. This group also handles investigation of fraud perpetrated by ICBC's business partners.

To date, this group has uncovered a number of large-scale frauds. As a result of its investigations, ICBC has been successful in suing a number of large groups caught defrauding the policyholders of ICBC. In fact, one case involved the single largest group ever caught defrauding an insurance company in Canada.

The Provincial Investigation Team uses sophisticated computer link analysis and other high-tech tools to battle these aspects of insurance fraud.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU)

SIU officers often have extensive backgrounds in law enforcement from a variety of police agencies. All officers have Peace Officer Status and are designated by the Attorney General as Special Provincial Constables.

In suspected cases of insurance fraud rings, SIU often works with the police in B.C. and in other jurisdictions. These joint operations have investigated and prosecuted criminals involved in stolen car rings, theft for export, staged accidents and "chop shops" that dismantle stolen vehicles and sell the parts.
