Buying and installing an anti-theft device
Where can I buy one?
Most automotive supply stores sell mechanical
anti-theft devices. Many retail stores stock them in their automotive
sections, too. Most shops that install car stereos sell and install
electronic
immobilizers and vehicle
alarms too.
Installation
Proper installation is critical. If you
buy an alarm or an electronic immobilizer, a professional must install
it. The wiring on these systems is spliced into your vehicle's electrical
system. One mistake could cause poor performance, a system failure
or expensive electrical damage.

alarms. |
When you choose an installer, ask:
- how the company guarantees its workmanship
- how long it has been in the mobile security
business
- about the installer's training and credentials
National standards
The Vehicle Information Centre of Canada
has established a Canadian
standard for automotive theft deterrents. Installers of anti-theft
devices must meet guidelines of the Underwriter's
Laboratories of Canada (ULC).
Warranties and guarantees
Buy an anti-theft device with a warranty.
Choose an installer that guarantees its work. Some guarantees
and warranties have restrictions. Ensure your needs are met.
