Vandalism claims

A vandalism claim is covered under Comprehensive insurance. A deductible applies, and a police report is required. Once you report to Dial-a-Claim, you will be directed to c.a.r. shop Valet or an ICBC claim centre where you will meet your adjuster and estimator.

Your car has been vandalized

If you purchased ICBC Comprehensive insurance, you have coverage for vandalism and malicious mischief. This includes vehicle damage caused by key-scratching, kicking and graffiti. Specified Perils does not provide coverage for vandalism.

What's the process?

Here is the process you can expect to go through for a vandalism claim:

Stage Who... Does what...
1 Customer Reports to local police.
2 Customer Calls Dial-a-Claim.
3 Estimator Estimator estimates damaged vehicle at c.a.r. shop Valet or ICBC claim centre.
4 Adjuster Investigates the claim.
5 Customer Pays deductible to repair shop.

Stage 1: Customer reports to local police

If the vandalism occurred in Vancouver, use the Vancouver Police Department's online reporting system external link. If you are outside Vancouver, call the local police or RCMP to make a report and ask about their preferences for reporting vandalism to an automobile. Be sure to note the police file number, if available.

Stage 2: Customer calls ICBC's Dial-a-Claim

Dial-a-Claim is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please call 604-520-8222 from the Lower Mainland or 1-800-910-4222 elsewhere in B.C.

Stage 3: Estimator estimates damaged vehicle at c.a.r. shop Valet or ICBC claim centre

Once a damage estimate has been completed, you may have your car fixed at the repair shop of your choice. The process will vary depending on whether you select a c.a.r. shop Valet location or another repair shop.

Stage 4: Adjuster investigates the claim

If a police or RCMP file was opened, you will meet with an adjuster who will follow up on the outcome of the investigation and proceed accordingly.

Stage 5: Customer pays Comprehensive deductible

If you have a vandalism claim, you pay the Comprehensive deductible and ICBC pays the remainder of the costs less depreciation. The deductible is the amount you have to pay toward repairs or costs before your insurance kicks in to pay for the rest.
