Moving from B.C.

On this page:

Are you moving away from B.C., or working or studying outside the province for a while? If so, be sure your auto insurance is valid and up-to-date. Here’s how:

1. Notify your Autoplan broker

Your insurance policy must always show your current address (location) and vehicle use.

Important: If your policy isn’t up-to-date, it may be invalid. In the event of a claim, you might not be covered.

Before leaving B.C., go to any Autoplan broker to update your insurance.

2. Find out the rules in your new location

Depending on where you’re moving to (or working or studying temporarily), you may have to register, licence and insure your vehicle

For more information, contact an insurance agent or the motor vehicle authority in the place you’re moving to. We recommend doing this before you leave B.C.

Note: If you do have to insure your vehicle as soon as you arrive, don’t renew your ICBC policy instead: you might invalidate your coverage.

3. Get your driving record and claims history

If you buy insurance in your new location, the insurer will probably ask for your driving record and your claims history.

We can mail, email or fax these documents to you.

To get your driving record… To get your claims history…
…go to any ICBC Driver Licensing Centre.

Be sure to bring your B.C. driver’s licence, as well as primary and secondary ID.
