Hit-and-run and Uninsured Motorist Protection

Protection against hit-and-run and uninsured motorists is part of your Basic Autoplan, protecting you and your property from uninsured or hit-and-run drivers on B.C. roads. You also get coverage for death and injury if you are in the U.S. or Canada.

What is covered?

Automatic coverage is provided against hit-and-run and uninsured motorist for all B.C. residents, even if you do not own or insure a vehicle. If you are in a hit-and-run crash on a B.C. road, you and your property are covered. If you have a hit-and-run crash elsewhere in Canada or in the U.S., you are covered for death or injury only.

How much does hit-and-run and Uninsured Motorist Protection pay?

Crashes that occur in B.C. entitle you to up to $200,000 for death or injury costs and/or for the repair of your property. If you crash elsewhere in Canada or in the U.S., you will get up to $200,000 coverage for death and injury costs.

What if you want more coverage?

If your claim for injury or death is larger than the $200,000 limit, your Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) on your policy will, subject to certain conditions and exclusions, kick in to cover your costs — up to $1 million.

Choose to get Excess Underinsured Motorist Protection and your UMP limit increases to $2 million.
